Mr. Brooks, age 59, is a disabled Vietnam veteran who served in the Army for 5 years enlisting in the volunteer draft right out of high school. He was stationed in Ft. Sill, Virginia, Germany (2 years) and then in Vietnam. His military assignment was intially Supply, but in Vietnam he was assigned special clearance and ordered to drive for a Colonel. During his tour in Vietnam, he contracted a bone illness that left him partially disabled. He had to end his year assignment a few months early and was MediVac'ed to Japan. After being discharged honorably from the Army as an E4, Mr. Brooks worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for several years. He had to quit working all together when he fell from a scaffold and broke his hip. As a result of his injuries and his illness contracted in Vietnam, he has very brittle bones and usually uses a cane or walker to navigate around his home. Mr. Brooks' sister is his closest remaining family member. Mr. Brooks and his sister have made the repairs they are able to make on their home, but can no longer make those needed repairs.
With the help of a Heroes at Home Grant from Sears, Community Volunteers, and ATC Freightliner Work Day Team, Mr. Brooks received the following improvements to his home to make it safe, warm, and dry. He had new windows installed, sheetrock repaired, interior and exterior painting completed, installation of new floor coverings, new electrical switches, new ceiling fixtures and fans, a new refrigerator donated by OG&E , and a new bed donated by Mathis Brothers Furniture. Mr. Brooks now can live comfortably in his home for which he is most appreciative of the work that was done for him.
