"The Retired Guys Ramp Builders"

Our spotlighted volunteers are "The Retired Guys Ramp Builders" as they are endearingly referred to by Rebuilding Together OKC. It all started back in November of 2001 when Rebuilding Together got a call from a retired individual who was leaving the hospital and needed a ramp. At that time, we did not have an official home modification program or ramp program. After contacting Tom Glover, a retired architect from Glover, Smith, and Bode, Tom went to work on some drawings and materials lists of what would be involved in the construction of a ramp. Then Dan Cooper, a golfing buddy of Tom's and a retiree from Cooper Medical Systems, was called to help. He told Tom, "Sure we can build these, tell you what we need." They called two more retired golfing buddies, Paul Coulter and John Sorenson to help. Next called was Mark Hayes, a PGA member, to assist them along with Chuck Gilmore, Roger Erickson, and Paul Lindsey. In 2008, Jean Derry, retired from DHS, joined the group.

Since 2001, the group built 60 foot long ramps and some less than 10 feet. They have installed ramps year round in Oklahoma including one when it was 100 degrees and one during an ice storm. The value of their labor alone is over $82,600.00
The "Retired Guys Ramp Builders" are a true inspiration to what can be accomplished with a committed group of volunteers. Thank you again for all you do for Rebuilding Together.
